Popular science: protect the earth home together - 50 years since the birth of World Environment Day

Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, June 5th June 5th is World Environment Day, and this year's theme is "Only One Earth". United Nations Secretary-General Guterres issued a statement on the occasion of World Environment Day in 2022, calling on human beings to work together to protect the earth.

The earth is the home on which human beings depend for survival. Since the 1960s and 1970s, with the increasingly serious problems of environmental pollution and ecological damage worldwide, environmental protection has gradually become an important issue of concern to the international community.

In June 1972, the United Nations held its first conference on the human environment in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, and adopted the "Declaration on the Human Environment" and an action plan to protect the global environment. All delegates suggested that June 5, the opening day of the conference, be designated as World Environment Day. In October of the same year, the 27th United Nations General Assembly decided to establish the United Nations Environment Program according to the recommendations of the Stockholm Conference, and designated June 5 as World Environment Day. Since 1974, the United Nations Environment Program has established a theme for World Environment Day every year and carried out related publicity activities.

2022 is the 50th anniversary of the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. The United Nations General Assembly decided to hold an international environmental conference in Sweden again on the occasion of this year's World Environment Day to commemorate the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the rise of global environmental protection actions. On June 2-3, 2022, the "Stockholm+50" international environmental conference will be held in Stockholm, calling for urgent action for a healthy planet and shared prosperity.

Guterres pointed out in his statement on World Environment Day this year that more than 3 billion people around the world are currently affected by ecosystem degradation, pollution causes about 9 million premature deaths every year, and more than 1 million animal and plant species are at risk of extinction. The recent "Stockholm+50" International Environmental Conference reaffirmed that achieving all 17 sustainable development goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development depends on a healthy planet. Governments, businesses and individuals should take action to protect the common home of mankind.

Guterres said that this year and next, the international community will have more opportunities to demonstrate the power that multilateralism can play in solving environmental crises, including reaching a global biodiversity framework and resolutions on plastic pollution. The only way to get to the future is to work with nature, not against it. Human beings "only have one earth" and we need to work together to protect it.
